Why do you volunteer for Ormiston Families?

I was looking to gain some skills and more experience in an admin role and use this to get employment. I thought volunteering would be a flexible way to get this experience a couple of days a week whilst focusing on my job hunt and going to interviews.

I had worked and volunteered for other charities in East Anglia before, doing similar database work which fits perfectly into this fundraising volunteering role, helping out Ormiston Families in their central office in Ipswich.

What do you enjoy about the role?

I love the opportunity to do a variety of things. I mainly work on Raisers Edge, the fundraising database but I put myself forward to help with any other tasks that needs doing to add to my work experience. One example of this is restructuring the storage area of the warehouse for the income generation team.

What skills/knowledge have you developed whilst volunteering with Ormiston Families?

Communication and attention to detail have been great skills to work on whilst being here. I’ve also had the chance to take part in a couple of training courses which have been really useful. I’ve now learnt even more about the Raisers Edge database and other people’s roles in the team to help me figure out what I may want to do in the future.

What has been your highlight since you began volunteering with Ormiston Families?

For the six months I have been volunteering with Ormiston Families I have felt massively part of the team as I have never been treated differently due to my volunteer role.  Everyone in the office has been really welcoming and friendly so I look forward to getting up and coming in every week.

Where do you see yourself a year from now?

Ideally back in employment somewhere, this volunteering experience has helped me get a few interviews elsewhere. Although, if a job did become available I would love to stay at Ormiston Families because of the support I have felt here. Ormiston Families really looks after their volunteers.
