Read Craig's Story - Point 1

Why do you volunteer for Ormiston Families?

I was working in the manufacturing industry for 20 years, but because of a physical disability I wanted to transition into an office role. I lacked experience in this environment though and had been unemployed for a few years.

I have been volunteering with Ormiston Families’ Point-1 Project for seven months supporting young people in Norfolk with emerging mental health problems. It offered the exact working environment that I wanted to gain experience with and was within the field of mental health, which is a career path that I have been interested in.

What do you enjoy about the role?

Being able to learn new skills within a relaxed friendly environment has definitely been a positive aspect of the position. Getting the chance to learn more about how organisations like Ormiston Families work within the sphere of mental health has also been educational.

What skills/knowledge have you developed whilst volunteering with Ormiston Families?

Since I've been with Ormiston Families I have massively expanded my knowledge of the Microsoft Access database program which is something I have not really worked with before. I have also had the chance to expand my communication skills and my research and problem solving skills.

What has been your highlight since you began volunteering with Ormiston Families?

I’ve loved getting to meet and work with new people; my previous job was very independent and did not offer much in the way of interpersonal experiences.

Where do you see yourself a year from now?

A year from now I very much hope to be working either part-time or full-time in a similar, if not same environment within an organisation that has the same values as Ormiston Families, being Caring, Brave and Effective. I'm also looking into the possibility of doing training to improve my prospects of working within mental health.
