Why do you volunteer for Ormiston Families?

I started volunteering for Ormiston Families seven years ago, however, I am now working for the charity in a paid position. At the time I was a stay at home mum and wanted to go back to work and try something different to what I did before. Volunteering at Ormiston Families suited my lifestyle as the flexibility they offer really does suit having children.

What do you enjoy about the role?

As a volunteer for Ormiston Families I really enjoyed the variety of programmes that I got to work on. I helped set up a project that supported women who had offended or were at risk of offending, another role whilst volunteering was the assistance of the facilitation of the Freedom Programme, this course raises the awareness of domestic abuse.

What skills/knowledge have you developed whilst volunteering with Ormiston Families?

I have gained masses of knowledge by volunteering at Ormiston Families. I was able to attend many courses and learn new skills such as motivational interviewing and substance abuse awareness to name a few.

Whilst volunteering at Ormiston Families I was inspired and encouraged by my manager to go onto study a BA (hons) degree in Social Care Practice. I go to University once a week and work part-time at Ormiston Families in Ipswich as a Senior Practitioner on the Mpower project.

What has been your highlight since you began volunteering with Ormiston Families?

The highlight of the year has been the winning of ‘Team of the Year’ at the Ormiston Families celebrates success event.

Where do you see yourself in a year from now?

I see myself here. I have been a paid member of staff at Ormiston Families for the past two years. I will be continuing to work on the Mpower project which spans across Ipswich, Great Yarmouth, Norwich and Kings Lynn supporting women who have had one or more children removed from their care.
