Our six marathon runners
We’ve got six inspiring runners taking on the Virgin Money London Marathon in April to raise funds for our programmes and services. As marathon day creeps ever nearer, they’re in a frenzy of training and fundraising.
Clare Rood, Dean Johnson, Dan Swann, Huw Breese, Jackie Spink and Sam Chater will all be donning their running shoes for 26.2 miles on the 23rd April.
Clare, human resources manager at Ormiston Families, challenged herself to do 40 new things before she turns 40 later this year, and this is one ticked off that list. Despite being a keen runner for years, Clare’s been too anxious to take part in a big event like this before.
Clare said: “I really believe in Ormiston Families’ mission and I have seen first-hand how important the charity’s work is to those in need across the region. After 11 years I wanted to show my support by doing something big, although I’m scared of crowds and worried about tripping over my own feet!”
Jackie, a teacher from Felixstowe, has previously run the marathon but still considers herself a beginner. She has been busy raising funds with a quiz night, bake sales and is planning a raffle and a Silent Reading Party.
Jackie said: “I chose to run for Ormiston Families after chatting to someone at ‘Walk with a Fork’ who works with families with fathers in prison. Someone close to me has a father in prison and struggles with the stigma and maintaining their relationship. I told her about the service that Ormiston Families offers which gave her the confidence to visit, and it was a really positive experience.”
Huw, head of humanities at The Gateway Academy, Essex, has already received exceptional support from his students, who have taken part in football matches and cultural cuisine days to raise money. He aims to inspire his son and students to keep fit and healthy.
Join us by wishing Clare, Jackie, Huw, Dan, Sam and Dean the best of the luck on the day and in their amazing fundraising efforts.
