Mpower Great Yarmouth project receives funding for another two years

Published on: 28/01/2019

Our Mpower service in Great Yarmouth has been awarded more than £100,000 to run for a further two years. This is thanks to local funders, the Rayne Foundation, Mercer’s Company, John Laing and the Together for Women fund via Norfolk Community Foundation.

Over the past three years, Mpower Great Yarmouth has supported 39 women who have had at least one child removed either at birth or later down the line. These women are struggling with an acute phase of grief from the loss they have experienced, which greatly worsens their issues, making it difficult for them to make positive life choices.

Mpower Great Yarmouth empowers these women to address the issues that led to the removal of their child or children into care, with the aim of reducing the likelihood of it happening again. Often these women are homeless, dependant on alcohol or drugs and not in the position to seek support through other means.

Alison Gillies, Mpower Service Manager at Ormiston Families says, “The Mpower project has made a significant impact on the lives of vulnerable women who are largely forgotten in society. By listening and giving them time, building a trusting relationship and gentle encouragement, we have seen women find a purpose again and begin to give back to their communities.

I would like to say a huge thank you to our generous funders who have collectively awarded Mpower Great Yarmouth with over £100,000 to be able to run the service for another two years. This will make a massive difference to the lives of the ladies using our service.”

Great Yarmouth itself is within 10% of the most deprived places to live in the UK, with 19% of working age adults in employment deprivation, according to the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2015. This indicates how Mpower’s service users are facing multiple challenges in areas of high deprivation.
